What Stony Brook homes usually ask for
Bigger rooms and older houses bring their own list.
-
Trim that doesn't match the house
Thin, builder-grade trim in a colonial with formal rooms, or old molding with patched sections that stand out.
Crown, casing and base sized for the room and matched where we're repairing.
-
Walls with years of patches
Older walls with cracks, bumps and patches you can see when the light hits them.
We repair and skim coat so the walls read flat and even.
-
Rooms without storage
Dens, offices and family rooms with nowhere to put books, files or toys.
Built-in bookshelves and cabinets designed for the wall they go on.
-
A big, unfinished basement
Colonial basements run under the whole house and often sit empty.
We plan it into real rooms and finish it with one crew.

Working on the North Shore
Stony Brook is the North Shore side of our home base. It’s in the Town of Brookhaven, it’s home to Stony Brook University, and it has a historic village on the harbor. Around the village you’ll find older homes, and in the neighborhoods beyond it a lot of colonials, with some capes, ranches and split-levels mixed in. We’re here every week.
Colonials and the details that matter
A colonial has a formal feel: a center hall, a living room and dining room off it, and bedrooms upstairs. In a house like that, the trim carries the look of the room. Skinny, builder-grade casing and a bare ceiling line make a big dining room feel unfinished. We put up crown molding, casing and baseboard sized for the room, with tight miters (the angled joints at the corners) and clean caulk lines. It’s close work, and it’s the part of the job we take the most care with.
Older homes need a lighter touch
In older houses, walls are rarely flat and corners are rarely square. Plaster cracks, and years of patching leave bumps you see every time the sun comes through the window. We don’t jump straight to tearing walls out. Most of the time we repair the cracks, then skim coat the wall, which means spreading a thin coat of joint compound over the whole surface and sanding it smooth. When old trim is damaged, we match what’s there instead of replacing a whole room of it.
Built-ins and home offices
Dens, family rooms and spare bedrooms often need storage more than anything. We build bookshelves and built-in cabinets to fit the wall: around a window, on either side of a fireplace, or floor to ceiling in an office. Each one is sized to its wall and painted to match the trim, so it looks like it came with the house.
The basement
Colonial basements usually run under the whole house, with a main beam down the middle. That’s a lot of room for a gym, a playroom or a guest space. Our basement finishing in Stony Brook page covers how we plan it.
Doors and floors to finish the job
Trim work often leads to the next question: what about the doors? Old hollow doors next to new crown and casing look out of place. We hang solid interior doors, set them so the gaps are even on all sides, and case them with trim that matches the rest of the room. If the floors are next, we plan the baseboard around them so nothing has to be pulled and put back twice.

Stony Brook questions
Do I need a permit for work in Stony Brook?
Stony Brook is in the Town of Brookhaven. Many interior trim and paint jobs don't need a permit, while basements and structural changes usually do. If your house is one of the older homes near the village, ask whether any extra rules apply before changing the outside. Check with the Town of Brookhaven building department.
Can you match the trim in an older house?
Usually, yes. We take a piece of the existing trim, look for a profile that matches, and build it up from standard pieces if nothing matches straight off the shelf. The goal is a repair you can't pick out from across the room.
Can you turn a spare bedroom into a home office?
Yes. That usually means built-in shelves or a desk along one wall, a patch and skim coat, new trim and paint, and sometimes a new floor. One crew does all of it.
Is Stony Brook too far north for you?
No. Stony Brook is one of our home-base towns. We're here every week, along with Medford, Sayville, Blue Point and Lake Grove.
