Where Blue Point capes show their age
Capes are great houses, but they have a handful of spots that wear out first.
-
Tight upstairs bedrooms
Sloped ceilings and short knee walls eat up floor space and storage.
We build shelves and cabinets into the knee walls so the room works harder.
-
Drafty, sticky windows
Old windows that fog, stick or let cold air leak around the frame.
New windows set square, insulated around the frame and trimmed clean inside.
-
A small, dated bathroom
Cracked tile, loose grout and a tub surround that's been caulked one too many times.
We tear it out and tile floors, walls and showers properly.
What we do in Blue Point

A bay town between Patchogue and Bayport
Blue Point sits on the Great South Bay, between Patchogue and Bayport, in the Town of Brookhaven. It’s one of our home-base towns, and we work here every week. A lot of the houses are capes and ranches, with some smaller cottage-style homes closer to the water. That shapes the work: smaller rooms, tighter spaces and a real need to make every foot count.
The upstairs of a cape
The second floor of a cape is usually two bedrooms tucked under the roof. The ceilings slope down to knee walls, which are the short walls where the roof meets the floor. Those rooms tend to have cracked ceilings, old paneling and not enough storage. We skim coat or re-sheetrock the ceilings, put up new trim, and build drawers or shelves right into the knee walls. It’s space that’s already there, just not being used. Our built-in bookshelves page has more on how we build them.
Windows and bathrooms
Two jobs come up in Blue Point again and again. The first is windows. Older windows fog up, stick, or let cold air in around the frame, and the damp air near the bay doesn’t help the wood around them. We replace them one opening at a time, fix any soft wood we find, and finish the inside with new trim. More on that on our window replacement page.
The second is the bathroom. A lot of capes have one main bathroom that works hard. When the tile cracks or the grout goes, water gets behind it. We take it down to the studs if we need to, put up the right backer board (a cement-based board that holds up to water) and tile it properly.
The basement
Many capes have a full basement under the house. It’s often the biggest open space in the home, but it comes with low beams, ducts and pipes to work around. We cover how we handle that on the basement finishing in Blue Point page.
Doors, trim and floors
Smaller homes show wear fast because every room gets used every day. Hollow-core doors get dented, trim gets chipped by vacuums and kids, and old floors wear through in the hallway first. Swapping in solid interior doors, new casing and baseboard, and one continuous floor through the main rooms makes a Blue Point cape or ranch feel pulled together without changing its layout. Because our crew handles all of it, the trim goes on right after the floor, and the paint goes on right after the trim.

Blue Point questions
Who do I check with about permits in Blue Point?
Blue Point is in the Town of Brookhaven. Window swaps, bathrooms and basements can each have their own rules, so check with the Town of Brookhaven building department before you start. We'll tell you what we know about your job when we come out.
Can you make a small cape bedroom feel bigger?
We can make it work better. Built-in drawers and shelves in the knee walls free up floor space, and a fresh skim coat and paint on the sloped ceiling makes the room feel cleaner and brighter. If a closet is in the wrong spot, we can frame a new one.
Do you replace windows in older capes?
Yes. We measure each opening, set the new window square, insulate around it and put new trim on the inside. If the wood around the old window is rotted, we repair it before the new one goes in.
How often are you in Blue Point?
Every week. Blue Point is one of our home-base towns, right next to Patchogue and Bayport, and a short drive from Medford, where we're based.
