What Riverhead homes usually need

Riverhead has some of the oldest houses we see and some of the newest. Both come with their own list.

  1. Old farmhouses that have shifted

Floors that slope, walls out of plumb and doors that won't close.

We frame and shim to level things out, then hang doors and trim to fit.

  2. Windows that let the weather in

Old, drafty windows with rotted sills and worn casing.

We replace the windows and rebuild the trim around them.

  3. Decks and porches in open country

Sun and wind across open land wear out boards and railings fast.

We repair or rebuild decks and porches on solid framing.

  4. New houses with plain finishes

Newer homes with basic trim, bare basements and builder doors.

We add trim, finish the basement and upgrade the doors.

Working in Riverhead

Riverhead is the gateway to the North Fork, where the farms and wineries start. It’s its own town, and it’s toward the eastern edge of the area we cover. From our base in Medford it’s an easy run east on the Long Island Expressway, within the 45 minutes we’re willing to travel. We’re a good fit for Riverhead homeowners who want one crew to take the whole project from start to finish.

The housing here spans a long stretch of time. There are old farmhouses and homes near downtown that go back generations, capes and ranches from the middle of the last century, and newer developments with larger colonials. Each has its own needs.

Old houses, careful framing

In an old farmhouse, nothing is square. Floors slope, walls lean and door openings have racked out of shape. Before any finish work, we deal with the structure: sistering joists (adding new lumber alongside old, tired joists), shimming and framing new walls so they’re plumb. Then the sheetrock, trim and doors go on straight.

Windows and trim

Drafty old windows with rotted sills are common in older Riverhead homes. We replace the windows and rebuild the interior trim so it matches the character of the house. In newer homes, we often add wider casing, taller baseboard and crown to give plain rooms more detail.

Decks and porches

Out here, houses often sit on open lots where sun and wind hit the deck all day. Boards dry out and crack, and railings loosen. We check the framing underneath, then repair or rebuild with new boards, rails and steps. A covered porch can get the same treatment.

Newer homes, unfinished basements

A lot of newer houses come with a full basement that’s never been finished. We frame, sheetrock, put in a ceiling and lay flooring, keeping the mechanicals easy to reach.

Why one crew matters out here

When you’re toward the end of a contractor’s range, juggling separate trades gets harder. The sheetrock person comes one week, the painter another, and each trip adds delay. We take a different approach on Riverhead jobs. Our crew handles the framing, sheetrock, trim, paint, tile and floors, so the work moves from one stage to the next without waiting on someone else to show up. We plan the job so we arrive with what we need, and we clean up every day before we head back west.

Permits and pricing

For framing, decks and basements, check with the Town of Riverhead building department. The price depends on the size of the job, the condition of the house and the materials you choose. You get a written, itemized price with a start date and how long the job will take. Call 631-745-9982.

Riverhead renovation questions

Is Riverhead too far for you?

No, but it's toward the edge of our range. Riverhead is within the 45 minutes we travel from Medford. It's an easy run east on the Long Island Expressway. We're a good fit for jobs where one crew can take care of the whole project.

Can you work on an old farmhouse?

Yes. Older homes take more measuring and more patience. Nothing is square, so we frame, shim and scribe to make new work fit the old house.

Who handles permits in Riverhead?

Riverhead is its own town. For framing, decks and finished basements, check with the Town of Riverhead building department.

Do you work farther out on the North Fork?

Riverhead is about as far as our regular range goes on the North Fork. If you're past it, call and tell us about the job, and we'll be honest about whether we can take it on.
