What Centereach homes usually need

Centereach has a lot of split-levels, and split-levels have their own set of problems. Here's what we see most.

  1. Short stairs between every level

Worn carpet or old treads on the half-flights make the whole house look dated.

We redo the stair treads, risers and railings to match the new floors.

  2. Different floors on every level

Carpet up, vinyl in the kitchen, tile in the entry, carpet again in the lower den.

We run one vinyl plank floor across the levels with clean edges at each step.

  3. A family room that feels like a basement

The lowest level of a split often has a low ceiling, small windows and old paneling.

New sheetrock, a better ceiling, brighter paint and new trim make it feel like the rest of the house.

  4. Kitchens and baths from the original build

Old cabinets, worn tile and bathrooms that were last touched decades ago.

We install new cabinets and tile, and handle the walls, paint and trim around them.

Renovation work in Centereach

Centereach is in the Town of Brookhaven, with Middle Country Road running right through it. Off the main road, the streets are lined with split-levels, high ranches and capes, most built in the 1960s and 1970s. We’re based in Medford, a short drive southeast, and we work in Centereach regularly.

Split-levels need a plan

A split-level puts the house on three or four levels joined by short flights of stairs. It’s a smart layout, but it’s tricky to update one piece at a time. Put new floors in the living room and the old stairs look worse. Redo the kitchen and the lower den suddenly feels older than ever.

That’s why we like to look at the house as a whole during the walk-through, even if you only plan to do part of it now. We can phase the work so each step fits with the next, or do the whole house at once. Either way, you get it in writing with a start date and how long each part will take.

Floors and stairs

The most common Centereach project we see is flooring. Vinyl plank is a good fit for splits, because it handles the lower level’s dampness and looks the same from room to room. We run it across the levels, then finish each step with clean nosing so the edges are tight and safe. The stairs themselves can get matching treads, or new wood treads with painted risers. New railings finish the look.

The lower level

The lowest level of a split is usually a family room over a slab, often with paneling and a low ceiling. We take down the paneling, hang sheetrock, smooth the ceiling or put in a drop ceiling, and add new trim and doors. With bright paint and a new floor, it stops feeling like a basement.

Kitchens, baths and the outside

We install kitchen cabinets and backsplashes, tile bathroom floors and showers, and handle the sheetrock, paint and trim that goes with them. Outside, we repair decks, fix roof leaks and power wash the house.

Doing it in phases

Not everyone wants to do the whole split-level at once, and that is fine. A common plan is floors and stairs first, then doors and trim, then the kitchen or a bathroom later. When we plan it together at the start, each phase is picked so it won’t have to be torn up for the next one. For example, we set the new floor height before the new doors go in, so the doors clear the floor without trimming later.

Centereach renovation questions

Can you put vinyl plank on the stairs too?

Yes. We can install matching stair treads and nosing so the stairs flow with the new floor. On some stairs, new wood treads and painted risers look better. We'll show you both options when we come out.

How do you handle floors between the levels of a split?

We plan the layout so the planks run the same direction where it makes sense, and we use clean nosing or trim at each step down. That keeps the edges tight and safe to walk on.

Do I need a permit for work in Centereach?

Floors, paint and trim usually don't need one. New walls, decks and bigger changes often do. Centereach is in the Town of Brookhaven, so check with the Town of Brookhaven building department.

Can you do the whole house at once?

Yes. Many Centereach homeowners do floors, doors and trim on every level together. It's one written price, one start date and one crew.
