The questions homeowners ask most

Before most people call a contractor, they’ve already spent an evening searching. How much does it cost to finish a basement? Do I need a permit for a deck? Can you skim coat over wallpaper? The answers online are usually written for somewhere else, or they end with “it depends” and nothing more.

So we wrote our own. These are the questions homeowners around Medford, Sayville, Stony Brook and the rest of Suffolk County tend to ask before a project starts, answered the way we’d answer them in your driveway. Plain words, trade terms explained, and honest about what changes the price and the schedule.

How the answers are organized

The questions are grouped the same way our services are:

  • Remodeling: basement costs, permits and timing, where to start on a room, and handyman vs. contractor.
  • Walls & Ceilings: skim coating, water-stained ceilings, drop ceilings vs. sheetrock, and paint.
  • Carpentry & Trim: doors, trim, crown molding, built-ins, windows and cabinets.
  • Floors & Tile: vinyl plank, porcelain and ceramic tile, and floor prep.
  • Outside the House: decks, roof leaks and power washing.

How to use these answers

Each answer starts with a short, direct reply, then goes into the details: what to look for in your own house, what the options are, and what questions to ask any contractor you talk to. At the bottom, you’ll find related questions and links to the services involved. If you’re planning a bigger project, like a basement or a full room, read the answers for each part of the job. They’ll help you walk into the first conversation knowing what matters.

A few things to know

We don’t put prices on these pages, because every house is different and a number without seeing the job isn’t worth much. Instead, each answer explains what drives the cost, so you know what to ask about. For permits, we give general guidance, but the rules come from your town. Always check with your town’s building department or incorporated village before you start.

If your question isn’t here, call 631-745-9982. We’d rather answer it on the phone than have you guess.
