The small repairs that never get done

Everyone has a list. The trouble is finding someone who will come out for it and do it right.

  1. The door that sticks

It rubs at the top, won't latch, or swings open on its own. Most people just stop closing it.

We tighten or shim the hinges, plane the edge if it needs it, and adjust the strike so it latches.

  2. Holes in the wall

A doorknob hole, old anchors from a TV mount, nail pops that show through the paint.

We patch, sand and prime so the spot doesn't show once it's painted.

  3. Loose or gapped trim

Baseboard pulling off the wall, casing with open corners, a stair skirt that's come loose.

We refasten it, close up the joints and caulk the edges clean.

  4. Old, cracked caulk

Around the tub, the shower, the kitchen backsplash or the window trim, it's turned yellow or pulled away.

We cut the old caulk out completely before running a new, even bead.

How handyman work goes with us

Small jobs still get a written price, so you know what you're paying before we start.

  1. Send us your list

Write down everything, big or small. Photos of each item help us understand what we're looking at.

  2. We look and price it

We go over the list, check the items in person if we need to, and give you a written price with a start date and how long the job will take.

  3. Work through the list

We bring what the list calls for and work through it room by room, protecting floors and cleaning as we go.

  4. Check it off together

Before we leave, we go down the list with you so you can see every item is done.

What goes on a handyman list

If it's carpentry, walls, trim, doors or caulk, it probably belongs on the list.

Doors
Sticking doors, loose hinges, latches that don't catch, missing door stops, closet doors off their track.
Walls and ceilings
Small holes, dents, nail pops, cracks over doorways and little ceiling patches.
Trim
Loose baseboard, gaps at the corners, a piece of casing or shoe molding that needs replacing.
Caulking
Tubs, showers, sinks, backsplashes and trim, cut out and redone so it looks clean.
Small carpentry
Shelves, closet rods, a loose stair tread or railing, a cabinet door that won't close right.
Touch-up paint
Painting over the patches and trim we fixed, so the spot blends in with the wall.

Handyman work in Suffolk County, NY

If you’ve been looking for a handyman in Suffolk County, NY, you already know the problem. The small jobs are the hardest to get someone out for. A door that sticks every summer, a hole behind the bedroom door, baseboard coming off in the hallway, caulk around the tub that’s gone black. None of it is a big project, but it adds up, and it’s the stuff buyers and guests notice.

We’re a carpentry and renovation crew, and we take the small list too. The same people who do our trim and sheetrock work fix your door and patch your wall, so the repair looks like it belongs there.

Why doors stick on Long Island

Humid summers make wood doors and frames swell, and houses settle over the years. That’s why the same door can close fine in January and rub in July. Usually it’s a loose hinge screw pulling the door down at the top corner. We start by tightening the hinges with longer screws that reach the framing. If that doesn’t fix it, we plane the edge and seal it so it doesn’t swell again. If a door is too far gone, we can replace it.

Patches that don’t show

A patch that shows through the paint is almost worse than the hole. We fill, feather the edges wide, sand smooth and prime before touching up, so the spot doesn’t flash when light hits it. For bigger holes and cracks, see our page on patching holes and cracks.

Getting a house ready to sell

A pre-listing punch list is one of the most common handyman calls. Doors that close, trim that’s tight, clean caulk and patched walls make a house photograph and show better. If the list is long, we can add interior painting or new trim to the same visit.

When the list gets bigger

Sometimes a handyman list turns into a room. If you’re fixing so much in one space that it makes sense to redo it, we’ll tell you, and our room remodeling crew is the same crew.

Why a carpentry crew for small jobs

Small repairs are where shortcuts show. A door planed too much has a gap at the top forever. Trim nailed back without fixing the joint pulls apart again. A caulk line run over old caulk peels in a season. Our crew does finish carpentry and wall work every day, so the small fixes get the same care as a full room.

Making your list

  • Go room by room and write down everything, even small things
  • Take a photo of each item
  • Note anything that needs to be done by a certain date
  • Mention anything you already have, like a new door handle or shelf

Handyman questions

Is my job too small for you?

Probably not. Tell us what's on the list. Small jobs are easier to price and schedule when they're grouped together, so it helps to write everything down, even the little things.

How is handyman work priced?

It depends on how many items are on the list, what each one needs, and whether any parts or materials are involved. We give you a written price for the whole list before we start.

What if a small fix turns out to be bigger?

Sometimes a sticking door is really a soft, rotted jamb, or a crack keeps coming back because something's moving. If we find that, we stop, show you, and price the bigger fix in writing before doing it.

Do you do electrical or plumbing on the list?

Our handyman work is carpentry, walls, trim, doors and caulking. For wiring or plumbing, you'll want a licensed electrician or plumber.

What's the difference between a handyman and a contractor?

A handyman takes care of small repairs. A contractor takes on whole rooms and bigger projects. We do both, so if your list grows into a room remodel, the same crew can handle it.
