Why store-bought shelves never look right
Freestanding shelves fill a wall. Built-ins make it part of the house.
-
Shelves that sag
Long particleboard shelves bow in the middle once they're full of books.
We size shelf spans for the load and stiffen the front edge with solid wood.
-
Gaps at the wall and ceiling
Walls aren't flat, so a bookcase pushed against them leaves gaps down the sides and across the top.
We scribe the sides to the wall and finish the top with trim, so it looks built with the house.
-
Tipping and wobbling
A tall case that isn't tied to the wall can rock, which is a real worry with kids around.
Every built-in we make is leveled and fastened into the framing.
-
Space that goes to waste
Alcoves, the space under stairs and the short knee walls upstairs in a cape rarely fit furniture.
Built-ins are made to the inch, so odd spaces become storage.
How we build your shelves
You'll see the plan and a written price, with a start date, before we cut anything.
-
Measure and talk it through
We measure the wall, check for outlets, vents and windows, and ask what's going on the shelves: books, a TV, games, photos.
-
Plan and price
A simple drawing of the layout, shelf spacing, doors and trim, with an itemized written price.
-
Build and set the boxes
The cabinet boxes go in first, leveled on the floor, shimmed and fastened to the studs.
-
Face frames, shelves and trim
Face frames and shelves go on, sides get scribed to the wall, and base and crown tie it to the room.
-
Finish and walk through
Nail holes filled, joints caulked, and painted or left ready for paint. We clean up and go over it with you.

Built-in bookshelves for Long Island homes
We build built-in bookshelves on Long Island that are made for one wall in one house: yours. Instead of buying a bookcase and hoping it fits, we measure the space, build shelves and cabinets to the inch, and fasten them to the framing. Then we trim them to match the room, so they look like part of the house instead of furniture pushed against the wall.
Built-ins make the most of spaces that are hard to furnish. The alcoves on either side of a fireplace, the wall under a staircase, the short knee walls in a cape’s upstairs bedrooms, or the long blank wall in a finished basement. A lot of colonials around Stony Brook and Setauket have living rooms and dens that were practically made for a pair of bookcases beside the fireplace.
Built on site, fit to the room
No wall is perfectly flat and no floor is perfectly level. That’s why built-ins are fit in place. We set the lower boxes level first, shimming where the floor dips, and fasten them into the studs. The sides get scribed, which means trimmed to follow the curve of the wall, so there’s no gap to caulk. Crown at the top and base at the bottom tie the shelves into the room’s trim, and the face frames hide the edges of the plywood.
Planning what goes on them
Good built-ins start with what you want to store. Heavy hardcover books need shorter shelf spans and thicker shelves than photos and baskets. A TV needs a wire path and some air around it. Kids’ games do better behind doors. We ask these questions up front so the shelf spacing and cabinet sizes work for you, not just for the picture.
Paint, wood and durability
Most built-ins we make are paint-grade, built from cabinet-grade plywood with solid wood face frames and shelf edges. Plywood holds screws well and stays flat, and the solid edges take the knocks from books sliding in and out. We fill, sand and caulk before paint so the joints disappear. If you want a wood finish instead, we build with veneered plywood and solid wood trim so the grain looks consistent. Either way, we’ll show you samples of the door style and shelf edge before we start.
Before we come out
- Pick the wall or space, and take a rough measurement if you can
- Note outlets, vents, switches and windows on that wall
- Save a few photos of built-ins you like, even from magazines
Part of a bigger project
Built-ins often go in with other work, like a finished basement, new trim and crown, or a fresh coat of paint. Our same crew does the framing, sheetrock, carpentry and paint, so the room comes together at once. If you already have cabinets that need hanging, see our cabinet installation page.
Built-in bookshelf questions
How much do built-in bookshelves cost?
The size of the wall, how many cabinets and doors, paint or stain, shelf style, and how much trim and detail you want all drive the price. We measure the space, sketch the layout with you, and give you a written, itemized price.
How deep should the shelves be?
For most books, around ten to twelve inches deep works. Lower cabinets are usually deeper so they can hold bins and games. We plan the depth around what you're storing and how much floor space you can give up.
Can you build around my TV?
Yes. We leave an opening sized for the TV, plan a path for the wires so they're out of sight, and leave room for any equipment in a cabinet below with airflow so it doesn't overheat.
Will the built-ins match my existing trim?
That's the goal. We match the base, crown and casing profiles in the room as closely as possible, and paint to match, so the shelves look like they were there from the start.
Can you put shelves in an old cape's knee walls?
Often, yes. The short walls upstairs in a cape usually have open space behind them under the roof. We check what's back there, then frame and build shelves or drawers into the wall.
How long does it take to build them?
It depends on the size and how much detail goes into the design. Your written price includes a start date and how long we'll be in your house.
