Where cabinet installs go wrong

Nice cabinets can look cheap if they're hung badly. These are the problems we see most.

  1. Doors that don't line up

If the boxes aren't level and flat to each other, the doors and drawers end up with uneven gaps.

We shim every box to one level line and clamp the boxes together before we fasten them.

  2. Uppers hanging on drywall

Screws that miss the studs, or walls that are soft or out of flat, and the uppers start to pull away.

We find the studs, add backing where the wall needs it, and fasten into solid framing.

  3. Gaps at walls and ceiling

Walls bow and ceilings dip, leaving gaps beside the end cabinets and along the top.

Fillers and scribe strips are cut to the wall, and crown closes the top.

  4. A countertop that won't sit flat

Base cabinets set on an uneven floor leave the countertop rocking or cracking.

We level the base cabinets across the whole run so the countertop sits flat.

How we install your cabinets

One crew handles the prep, the install and the trim. You get a written price and start date first.

  1. Check the delivery and plan

We go over your cabinet plan, open the boxes and check for damage or missing pieces before anything goes on the wall.

  2. Prep the walls

Find the studs, snap a level line, and fix any wall that isn't solid enough or flat enough to hang on.

  3. Hang uppers, set bases

Uppers go up on the level line, bases get shimmed to match, and every box is fastened to the framing and to its neighbor.

  4. Fillers, trim and hardware

Fillers scribed to the walls, crown and light rail on top, toe kick at the bottom, knobs and pulls drilled straight.

  5. Adjust and walk through

Doors and drawers adjusted so the gaps are even, everything cleaned, and ready for the countertop company to measure.

Cabinet installation for Long Island homes

Cabinet installation in Suffolk County is where a kitchen or bath either comes together or doesn’t. You’ve spent time picking the cabinets and the layout. Our job is to get them on the wall level, fastened into solid framing, and lined up so every door and drawer has the same even gap. We install cabinets. We don’t sell them or design kitchens, so you’re free to buy from any supplier you like.

A lot of kitchens in the split-levels and high ranches around Holbrook, Ronkonkoma and Lake Grove are original to the house. The walls behind those old cabinets have been there a long time, and they’re not always flat or plumb. We deal with that before the new cabinets go up.

Level is everything

Almost every cabinet problem starts with something that isn’t level. We find the high point of the floor, snap a level line around the room, and set every box to it. Base cabinets are shimmed until the top of the whole run is flat, so the countertop sits right. Upper cabinets are clamped together and fastened through the back rail into the studs. When a wall bows in or out, we shim behind the cabinet so the face stays straight, and cover the gap at the end with a scribed filler.

Assembled or flat-packed

Some cabinet lines arrive fully assembled. Others, often from home stores, come flat in boxes and have to be put together first. We can do either. Flat-packed cabinets take more time on site, so that goes into the written price. We check every box for square as we assemble it, because a box that’s a little out of square will never let its door hang straight, no matter how carefully it’s hung.

The work around the cabinets

Cabinets rarely go into a room that’s ready for them. Old tile might need to come off, a wall might need backing or new sheetrock, and the floor might be changing too. Because one crew handles the carpentry, walls, tile and trim, you don’t have to line up three different contractors to get the room ready and finished.

Before we come out

  • Have your cabinet plan or order sheet handy, even if it’s not final
  • Let us know when the cabinets are due to arrive and where they’ll be stored
  • Tell us if old cabinets need to come out and whether you want to keep any
  • Mention any plumbing or electrical changes, so those trades can be scheduled around the install

Photos of the room from a few angles help us spot trouble early. If you want storage that’s built on site instead of ordered, take a look at our built-in bookshelves.

Cabinet installation questions

Do you sell or design cabinets?

No. We install them. Most people order their cabinets through a kitchen showroom, a lumber yard or a home store, and the cabinet supplier handles the design. Once you have the plan, we look it over for anything that could cause trouble on install, like an outlet in the way or a wall that isn't where the drawing says.

Can you hang new cabinets on old walls?

Usually, yes. What matters is whether the wall is flat and whether we can fasten into solid framing. Old plaster, bowed studs and crumbling sheetrock need attention first. We wrote a full answer in our homeowner questions below.

How much does cabinet installation cost?

It depends on how many cabinets, whether they come assembled, how much crown, filler and trim work there is, and how much wall prep is needed. Removing old cabinets adds to it too. We look at the room and your plan, then give you a written, itemized price.

Can you take out my old cabinets?

Yes. We remove old cabinets carefully, especially if you want to reuse them in a garage or basement, and haul away what you don't keep.

Do you put in the countertop?

We set the cabinets level and ready so your countertop company can measure and install. Getting the base cabinets flat and level is what lets the countertop fit right.

How long does cabinet installation take?

It depends on the number of cabinets, the trim, and what the walls need. Your written price includes a start date and how long the install will take.
